I have early cabbage, purple sprouting broccoli and carrots , all in different areas.
What size ofmesh do I need to prevent carrot fly and cabbage whites /other butterflies?

Cheers
Jo

B'flies? Either..

Carrot fly? The finest.

There are only 2 choices.

Tim,,

Have you used the Kays product, it is called something other than Environmesh - I think it is their own interpretation.....

It is pretty cheap compared to the real thing but I do not know the mess size. I was going to give them a call to check.

The cheapest supplier of environmesh I can find is Harrod Horticulture at the moment.

I recently "acquired" some mesh from work, its called debris netting, I believe scaffolders use it, it has a mesh similar in size to enviromesh and it's green in colour. I have a piece 5m by 3m and there's another waiting for me when the builders have finished what they're doing

alit

for the cabbage i used a double layer of mesh this year.  the pigeons completely wrecked my cabbages and i read a double layer compltely confuses them.  i  now have huge, healthy cabbages, so big that i am having difficulty getting through them.  they really had made a mess of the cabbages before i double meshed them.

tim

Jerry - no , I haven't tried it but I put a,photo of it on the site some time ago. It seems to be of the finest quality?

alit - I cannot see how anything - from flea beetle to pigeon, can get through any mesh?? Netting, yes.

alit

yes, you are right.  i didn't know there was a difference between mesh and netting.  but size is obviously important.

i like merry tiller got a load of scaffolding debris mesh and used it last year, washed it through and i'm reusing it this year. indestructable stuff. i.ve used a load against a new fence with the intention of hopefully keepin next doors weeds from blowing in and growing sweetpeas etc up on it. its great for brassicas and fruit too.

This is how I do my carrots;

note; the gap at the end would normally be closed, this view has been staged to show the carrots under the cover.

and this is how I do my brassicas and anything else that need protecting, the mesh is 19mm (¾")

Sooo neat, TG. Is that garlic?

A couple of thoughts, however lucky you have been -

1. Most pigeons can peck through netting.
2. Netting cannot protect against cabbage whites or flea beetle.

Then I must have been lucky all these years, so fingers crossed that it will continue  ;D ;)

I'll keep mine crossed too!

I've had that site on my Favourites for yonks.

And now the blog!

Tee Gee

Are you the author of that fantastic site?

Yes I am, and thanks for those kind words.

For the record I used to frequent A4A  a long time ago, recently I was asked in another forum to join you all so here I am.

Nice to see a few old faces around, perhaps it is my user name that has thrown you.

I had to re-register in A4A under a new name because I had forgotten my old user name.

Tee gee is the short for The Gardener @ the gardenersalmanac

FAO Jerry,
The product from Kays you spoke about is called Viromesh.

I purchased some this year. The price was not bad...however, I cannot remember it now.  I could not find it on the kays website after one of their website changes, but I have not looked for a number of weeks.
I am using it to protect carrots and turnips and the like.
It looks very good to me.  I cannot see how anything like flea-beatle would get through it.

TG - no, it didn't throw - I didn't want to blow your cover. Nice to have you back!

Thomas - I think that when I posted a photo of it a while back, I said it was finer than most & looked good.
