Has anyone heard of this or has grown it?

I hadn't until sunday when i saw it in a local nursery I was visiting, then blow me, in the post yesterday were some free veg seeds which included seeds of the same plant!

I am intrigued, these are apparently cabbages which grow on tall stems, are biennial rather than annual cropping and appear to be 'cut and come again' rather than harvest once as conventional cabbages are.

After my recent episode with cabbages that bolted, and finding it quite convenient to pick a few leaves rather than a whole head of cabbage, I am keen to try growing them and wondered if anyone had experience of these plants.

thanks

Hello,
I too received some cabbage walking stick seeds with a batch of free seeds. Will give them a go, if only for the novelty factor. Will be very interesting to see how tall they actually do grow!!

BAGGY

Wonder if it will keep the pidgeons off ?

Have only just seen this post, but I bought some seeds from "The Organic Gardening Catalogue" to grow, as well.  These are described as Kale though, variety "Jersey Walking Stick" so maybe a similar thing, if not the same?  These are more of a "Cut-and-Come Again" plant as well. :)  The link's below:

We'll have to have a competition to see who gets the tallest plant! ;D
Sheldon, Birmingham.  I've put the pin on Google Earth where my shed is, in the allotments.  It's in an area with a satellite photo which is cool!  You can't miss it, there's a bl**dy great big Airport next door!

My son picked out a packet of walking stick cabbage seeds a while back. I'll be giving them a go this year too.

Seeing as I also have a pack to plant (I am aiming to grown some bean poles  ::)) it sounds as though we may have a good number of us entering this "comp"  ;D

d**n, there goes my "original" thought...  :-\  Actually, I had another (hopefully original) thought...  Plant them about 2 metres apart, and when they're finished in December, cut the tops off and hey presto, instant, free fence posts for attaching windbreak material to.   ;D   (should be in the Top Tips surely... ;))

I don't care, I backed 3 three horses which placed in the GN today so I'm happy... hic! ;)

Maybe as original poster Garden Cadet might like to start a challenge thread?

growmore

I think these take 2 years to grow  to full size.  So don't  cut tops off first year .

A 'Challenge Thread'? How do you mean?

kenkew

Go here http://www.allotments4all.co.uk/joomla/component/option,com_smf/Itemid,28/board,24.0

and start a thread for other interested people to get involved in 'Grow your own Stick'.
