Allotments 4 All

Ted was determined to get the greenhouse glazed and finished today.  This morning, in fact, as rain was threatened for the afternoon.  I decided to leave him to it while I went off shopping, as my remarks and laughter of yesterday still hadn’t been fully forgiven.

On my return, the greenhouse was in the same condition as when I went out, and as I had been gone for a few hours, I wondered what could have gone wrong.  Going into the kitchen through the back door, laden with bags, I realised something was certainly wrong.  There was a strange, burnt smell in the kitchen, and Ted was looking very sheepish.  It turned out that among the many distractions yesterday, he somehow lost focus on the fact that the greenhouse assembly instructions were still in the garden.  Having enjoyed a night al fresco, they had been a mite sodden when he finally spotted them this morning, and he was determined to get them dry.

Ted may be a very intelligent man, but he is not totally practical, and not very well versed in the uses of a microwave.  He decided to try it first with a thirty second zap, setting the microwave accordingly, before being diverted by a phone call.  It was a very protracted phone call, he can now offer advice that in fact thirty minutes in the microwave is not recommended to dry paper.  His confident return to the kitchen expecting dry instructions quickly turned to panic when he saw the flames rising.  He opened the microwave door, picked up the burning remains, and threw them into the sink.  The instructions were now just as wet as when he had started, but the pages for France, Italy, Spain and England were no longer available.  Fortunately Denmark survived.

Ted spent the afternoon visiting a number of Danish to English translation web sites.  Apparently some of these had very interesting pictures, which caught his attention for quite some time, but none were actually of greenhouses!  He assures me he has not registered his credit card details with any of them.  The upside of this is that he can now inform people that the phrase ‘”til slut” means “finishing”, and “ikke inkluderet” means “not supplied”.  So far this knowledge is not proving very useful in getting the blasted greenhouse finished, but he has assured me he will not sleep until the translation is complete.  It could be a very long night.
