How do you earth up potatoes in raised beds?...do you only put in a small amount and use soil around them or is it best to cover with black plastic (with slits for pots to grow thru) and not earth up

hey kg, there's something in the air ... does http://www.allotments4all.co.uk/joomla/component/option,com_smf/Itemid,57/topic,17850.0 answer the question?

Some peeps on this site have given up earthing up altogether, but I mulch just to keep the earthworms happy.

A method I've read in square foot gardening is to get a round fence stake about 3" diameter drive it into the ground about 12",remove stake fill bottom of hole with some compost, well rotted manure to a depth that flattens the bottom of the hole. Drop in potato with ' chit ' facing upwards, fill hole until potato is covered by 4" of soil/compost. Just keep filling the hole as you would for earthing up.
