Could you tell me where you get the green net from to cover veg please..

Well the cheap rubbishy stuff (which I have)  can be bought in the pound shop, but I did say it is rubbish ...

You can buy far better quality netting at any garden centre, but I presume there are some cheaper sources available ... ? Wilko is reasonable, for example.

The truth is though, you pay your money, and take your choice as regards quality. As my cheap nets fall apart, I will be replacing them with more durable stuff.

Curry is it best to cover greens and cauliflower's with the net when growing them?
I have some fleece would I use that instead?

The net will protect against pigeons, provided it is supported OFF the plants, since pigeons will stand on the netting to get contact with the green leaves. Fleece provides more protection re temperature, and also stops cabbage white butterflies, but can inhibit the light slightly. Enviromesh is possibly better, although noticeably more expensive.

Other members may have difference views, because that is all I can give - a point of view.

I started my brassicas off under a fleecy cloche last year and when they got too big, replaced it with enviromesh. Kept pidgeons off ok although weeds flourished underneath and butterflies still got in (probably because I hadn't fastened down the edges properly).

Aldi's have nets on offer next week, mine are OK from last year tho may need untangling!

Does it have to be green, Rosy?  I much prefer to use black pond netting which I have bought by the metre quite cheaply.  Lasts for ages and doesn't tangle so readily either. :)

No not at all just was looking at some pictures and this person had green net over his cabbages. So I thought as i'm going to grow all sorts of greens (i hope) this year I may need some of that.

Be aware of the mesh size, as regards what pests you wish to protect against. I believe that black pond netting is quite open, so will keep birds out but butterflies etc can probably get in.

Thanks Sandersj89 that Knowlenets site is brill has everything. It was your pictures I was looking at and saw you used green net. Also was looking at the camp site. Do you own the camp site or run it?

The green stuff on my plot was from Kays 2 years ago and it has now reached the end of it'slife. It seems to get brittle after a while and easily rips. I am using the woven stuff now and hope it will last a bit longer.

The campsite is run by my parents at home on the farm in Devon. I help out "remotely" as I am in Sussex.  That means I handle the enquiries the website generates and maintain the booking logs and the like. Though each summer I help out and run the famr for a few weeks so my parents can get away.

Hi Rosyred! I bought some green netting in the Garden Centre last weekend, it was only about a pound or fifty pence more than wilkos and seem very good as I have both. Im using it for my Strawberries in pots this year which I ordered last week, 10 plants. Dan :-)

yes lishka, I'm sworn off the green stuff (and black cotton thread since cleo told me off for using it :'(). Just use enviromesh and fleece now, although it's not as pleasing to the Eye at least the birdies will be safer :D
