Hi - I have some aubergines in pots in an unheated prop. on my daughter's south facing windowsill.  About half have germinated over the last couple of days.  Should I still keep the cover on and see if any more come through?  When should they start to fend for themselves - probably downstairs in the slightly heated but north facing conservatory?  I thought I would try a plant in the conservatory over the summer, one in the garden and the rest down the allotment.   For the ones in the conservatory and garden can anyone give me an idea of what size pot they will need to end up in?
Any other thoughts re Aubergines (they are of the long purple variety)?
Cheers  :D

That being so then I guess I should keep them in the prop on the windowsill until too big for the lid??

And yes they are so small and appeared almost overnight!   :D

I would be inclined not to disturb them until they have 4 true leaves, they should be relatively robust then, and able to withstand changes in temperature and light conditions.
The impossible is just a journey away ...

For those who have NOT sown aubs yet - & only have a cold 'house - DON'T - for at least a month!!

You'll gain nothing.

Wish I had known that Tim. I planted mine in January and i've got nothing coming up, same goes for strawberries and two types of tomatoes. Do you think something may happen when it gets warmer or i'll have to start again?

Where were they sown? In the warm or in a cold greenhouse?

Toms and Aubergines will normally show after about 2 weeks if they are in 12 degrees celcius. Strawberries can take longer.

Toms & Aubs? I would start again. No great loss.

Jerry - yes - but times are SO variable?
For instance, my Aubs germinate in 9-12 days, depending upon variety. Toms - 5 days.
NO argument!!

They are outside in one of those plastic greenhouses. Shame about the toms as they were the small yellow ones that someone gave me.

Tim, are you sure not to plant aubergine now if you only have a cold house?
My packet reads:

Sow: Indoors, January - March in trays of seed comopost. Keep moist and warm 20-25c. When the seedlings have developed 2-4 leaves, transplant to individual 3 in. pots, maintian a temperature of approx. 18c. Transplant to large pots or borders in the greenhouse or coldframe.

I sowed mine two days ago... can I take them out and dry them again?!! I already sent the remainder of the packet to my aunt!

I'm starting a business called 'Seedling Weeds' - I'm selling 'clothes' for them.

Little knitted jackets, bonnets, root-bootees and personalised embroidered fleece blankets. I think the business idea will catch on  ;D

I'm also toying with the idea of inventing a two-way 'seedling-com' device so you can hear them crying in the nursery and 'rush downstairs' with your watering can and feed them on demand.

Oh ... and I've copyrighted the idea so no chance of nicking it  8)
