Has anyone tried this method of keeping slugs and snails off plants?
I think  we could knock something up to  do same or similar job as these  using flattened old copper pipe.. I have been following write ups  on using copper collars  and the results  seem encouraging ....... Unless You have tried this tactic and know different...Jim..

I invented my own zero cost adaptation of the idea. I work as a technician in a college electrical workshop so dispose of copious amounts of copper wire. I strip this down the the copper and form rings. Drop these over the seedlings, not guaranteed but they seem to help ... and as I said, zero cost ...

Never tried it, but I bought some of the copper tape cheap at my local DIY store so I'm going to put around collars made from 2ltr drinks bottles and try that out.

I haven't used the copper rings but did use the plastic ones with the overhanging lip on my young lettuces and comfrey. Worked a treat and cheaper than the copper.

I used offcuts of copper pipe from a plumber friend of mine last year on my 2nd load of runners (first lot became slug fodder) Seemed to work for me.

Doris, how did you use them? what did you do? did you lay them around the plants - I'm thinking that copper pipe is a bit narrow - did you poke the emerging seedling through? Would be grateful to know, as I have some pieces of copper pipe lying around somewhere.

jenny I just layed them around the plants, ummmmmmm in a sort of frame on the ground if that makes any sense!! And put crushed eggshells close to the plants, for good measure!

Thanks, Doris, will give that a go then. :)

I've been playing around with copper too, and thought that it seems to work, but was looking at a cheaper way of getting the effect. Your copper pipe could be used as a mechano type frame, if you got some of the 15mm. copper fittings, and just pushed the tube ends in without soldering them, and they could be taken apart for storage, and made into various shapes to surround different crop groups. It's a thought!

I find that plastic drinks bottle rings work well for me -especially if filled with egg-shells or slug-stoppa.

Jeremy I tried slug stoppa and it had absolutely no effect on my hippo sized slugs!
