Was wondering if those that have, could shed some light on the pros an cons of growing said plant?

I know I'm not set up for celery proper so this seems a great alternative?

Is it self sufficient?  Easy to grow, special needs etc?   :-X :-\

Simply Vegetables (Seeds of Distintion)  sell a Leaf Cutting Soup Celery.

Very pungent is how they describe it.  Assume it is like a glorified kind of parsley :-\

I once grew some celery that you just grew and did not have to cover the stem to get it white. It didnt grow large but I ate it in salads and the rabbits had the leaves! Perhaps that is what it is. This was many years ago and I cannot remember what it was called.

angle shades

Its easy to grow, looks like tall broad leaf parsley, but tastes of celery and is
biennial and mine grew in semi-shade, hope this helps, angle shades,x
grow your own way

How much moisture will it need, presume if in shade it will be able to fend for itself quite well?

What about planting companions?

ah right, not heard of leaf celery before. i have cut straight to the chase and grew lovage, you use the leaves in soup and stews for a strong celery flavour. it's lovely :)
it's a perrennial plant so even though the leaves have all died down, it will be back in spring

A better alternative might be to grow Celeriac. That way you will get 2 crops for the price of 1 !!  Celeriac leaves (the young ones) are really great in soups or stews or can be finely chopped with Parsley and a little grated Lemon zest and Garlic and sprinkled over grilled fish. Mackere grilled with this on top is delish   :Pl

Hi Flowerlady - I believe that this is also called Parcel -which I grew last year - very prolific - can be used to flavour soups and stews. I got the seeds from Sarah Raven's catalogue. I may be able to spare a small amount if you haven't found it elsewhere. Just pm me.

Was really intrigued by this, so had a trawl on the net - think I found it - well found Par-cel anyway, link is here:

Leaf celery is not like celery as such - it has a similar kind of taste but is more like a herb.  I know from my Northern Irish roots -it is a prime ingredient in "soup Veg"  and is used in soups stews etc.  It is well worth trying if you like stews and soups !

I grow it as an annual!

Par-cel's European name is Zwolsche Krul. Going to try it this year.

Not sure if it is the same as leaf celery but it certainly looks simiilar.

Already grow lovage and find it very useful -especially of out of celery.

Just discovered this:

QuoteMedicinally, lovage is used for stimulation of digestion and as a remedy for an upset stomach. Lovage can also help get rid of flatulence

Ideal companion for Jerusalem Artichokes then?

;D ;D ;D

Svea

maybe not entirely, but it does halp with lentil soups and bean stews.

it should not be used in large quantities (as everything in life), got some side effects or other. but then most herbs do...
