Hi

I am concerned that I may have left it too late to over winter garlic and broad beans.  What do you think-should I wait?

dunno about beans, but i just asked this question over on edible plants where there are a couple of threads regarding garlic.
the answer was that garlic can be planted til march although the earlier the better with october being the optimum time.
still worth checking out the other threqads before you start planting tho, ;D
there was much discussion about soil depth etc

Garlic should be fine ..But I think it is too late for broad beans ... I don't think a lot is to be gained by over wintering broad beans ..I usually put a row in out of habit in Sep or Oct  some say Autumn sown have a better chance of missing black fly..But my main crop of broadies I set in March..and at the first sign of black fly pinch the tops out ..I always have loads of beans..What does others think ?..Jim

Why not pinch out the top first that way the blackfly land on someone else's broadies  ;D  Once you've picked the top you can stir fry them  :)
I came, I saw, I composted

I agree that it is too late for beans, but not for garlic. If the ground is unsuitable, then you could try planting the garlic in soft compost, perhaps in the greenhouse, then plant out when the ground is more accomodating ...

Why not plant, say, just a dozen broad beans now ? If you get a forecast of a few mild days, nothing lost. Then, plant the rest as advised above and compare the results ? It's all about learning for all of us. Nobody knows everything  .... well .... possibly with the exception of wardy   :P

Hi Mary, Don't know about broad beans but think it is unlikely.  Garlic you still have time.  Old Folk Lore: "Plant garlic on the shortest day and it will be ready on the longest".  Good luck whatever you do!   :) busy_lizzie
