ok.
i've chosen, ordered and received next years seeds.
my brassica collection seems fine on its own.
the weed pile remains too wet to burn.
now what?
i need something to do on the plot, something that will take AGES.
a reason to make regular daytrips up there.
i'm not very good at just hanging about, i'm definately better at 'purposeful'
any ideas folks?

At the moment my "Big Project" on plot is Trench Composting.

Dig a trench fill it with compostable material and cover with earth, I have mixed in seaweed and manure and intend to use it as a bean trench when completed.

It's a little and often job....provides a mad half hours activity this time of year as and when the weather permits.

Cheers

Dave
My Allotment is starting to rule my life.
Ain't life great !

If you're really, really bored, you could sieve the stones from an area for carrots.

daveandtara

dave- fab idea. ;D
i'm gonna start that today. if i do one trench at a time me and sophie (aged 3) can trundle round there every morning with a sandcastle sized bucket of peelings!
djbrenton- as sad as it sounds, i've already done that  :-[
i've got a small raised bed (3ft x 6ft) that i've filled with sieved earth.
yup. i really am that bored!
i may have to do a second one for parsnips :o

Write some Christmas cards?
I travelled to a mystical time zone
but I missed my bed
so I soon came home

wardy, you read my mind!
i rescued a double glazed window from the skip. any reason i shouldn't have a double glazed cold frame?
should i make vents in the walls or anything?
never having used one (or seen one except in books) i'd be grateful for any words of wisdom.
thanks, Tara xxx

Ok, absolute last resort for the bored allotment addict. Instead of rotating your crops this year, how about rotating your beds!
Yes, thats right. Move the soil where you grew potatoes last year to where you grew beans last year etc. That way your plot can look exactly the same this year. That should keep you going till Spring. You can als reduce wear and tear on your paths by rotating the heavy use paths to less worn areas and vice versa If you've got a shed you can replace all the nails/screws to ensure sturdiness too.

djbrenton

And I forgot the obvious. Number all your potatoes in the order you dug them so you use them in the right order.

Would you use an indelible marker for that DJ as otherwise the numbers might rub off ?  ;D

Oh I want ferls but my old man says no.  He's waiting for dog to snuff it so we can start having holidays again so doesn't want anything else tying us to the house.  Oh gawd, I'd forgotten how much I hated foreign travel  :(  Even watching waves on telly makes me nauseous  :-X

A week at Loggerheads will do me fine  :)

I came, I saw, I composted

Read some beekeeping books, get some beehives in Thorne's New Year sale, assemble them, and before you know what's happening you'll be complaining like mad because you can't get the bees before June!

vee

Come and help me ;) ;D
