I have/had an ancient clematis in my garden which I hacked to the ground, and the little blighter keeps shooting still. I didn't want to use anything too horrific cos it's close to other plants and well, not very good at killing things, intentionally anyway.....I've been treating it with glyphosphate on a regular basis to no avail, but the next step up, seems to be lethal poisonings used for killing trees. Does anyone have any ideas as to how I can finally kill this thing?? Thank you
Lottie

SBK brushwood killer may well do it.

Is it a Montana? I just had to hack mine back as it was trying to smother the conservatory roof!!!!

How did you guess, Moonbells!!! Yup, it is, planted in wrong place years and years ago. Thanks for that, will give it a go!! Fingers crossed, dynamite next option!!

Lily

Try reverse psychology, pamper it, want it to grow. And like a lot of things that I want to grow it just dies.  :'(

I once tried to grow a montana and the slugs got it.  There you are, get a load of slugs to eat it up.  ;D  ;D

Lily, you're not being so kind as to send me all your slugs and snails are you? Is such a sweet thought, but I know how much you'd miss them....This thing I refer to as a clematis has a trunk about 4" wide, it's a monster!!!!
Lottie  ;D

Lily

With a 4" wide trunk, you'll need a lot of slugs.  Where's my torch.  Best get hunting for them there slugs.  ;D  ;D

Lily

Just thought, what you need is a Beaver. Anyone from Canada that could send you one.  ;D

yep a beaver on display in the garden..MMMMmmmm...certainly an unusual feature and a real talking point if nothing else   ;D

But the Beaver would chip away at the bark and destroy the Clematis. ;D  ;D  Then it would chip away at everyone else's trees, than you'd have a dam........... not such a good idea after all.   :-[  :-[

Twospot Ladybird

Hi Lottie, why not try what I did. I accidentally killed a Clematis Montana a couple of years ago. It was a big one, trunk about the same width as yours and had been there for a very long time, I think 20-30 years. Anyway, like you, I felt that mine was in the wrong place and decided to move it. I cut it back hard in the spring, dug it out with as much root ball as possible and re-planted it else where and it died. I have since read that they do not like to be moved.

TEL

You can always try copper nails in the trunk i hear thats meant to kill of trees so it may work.

Have tried Twospot, the roots go into the lawn, and am loathe to ruin it.
Great idea, Tel, will try it, erm...how many nails I we talking here? Don't want to go overboard, but then again, don't want to just put in a drawing pin....
