Allotments 4 All

I'm new to this allotment lark, thanks to some very good friends.

Was given a half plot as my birthday present (and a complete surprise), which included a shed, water butt, compost bin, and the use of a rotivator for the day.  My friends had already cleared the site and put the shed up before my birthday.  Then they took the day off work, and helped me rotivate the plot.  Unfortunately it rained, so perhaps not the best weather for rotivating.  But the whole plot has now been done.  So, my question is...should I leave it now til the Spring?  It's quite heavy soil and still very wet...

I've pout a few onions in, but I think the ground may still be too wet.  I've also got some garlic, but again, will the bulbs survive in the wet?

Any thoughts greatly appreciated!

Hello Salpott, welcome!

I was thinking of sowing green manure on my newly acquired plot and according to the BBC website it's not too late to sow mustard (sinapsis alba), rye (secale cereale) or winter field beans (vicia fabia) - they're all OK up to the end of November if the soil's suitable.

Not sure where you'd buy these though; probably a large garden centre or specialist catalogue.

Edwin tuckers does a wide range of green manures. I think Kings do too.

I sowed some grazing rye a couple of weeks ago, but it hasn't come up yet.  :'(

Yes to the share in the harvest....that has already been made quite clear!  But most definitely worth it.  I have to confess to a tear or two when they jumped out from behind the shed and opened the bubbly.

And I didn't stop smiling all day.   If anyone wants to borrow them for some hard work, I can thoroughly recommend them  :)

Don't worry too much about the garlic and onions - bang em in - nothing ventured nothing gained :)
