Silly question folks.....when applying lime to the plot, is it ok to use hydrated lime available from a builder's merchant?

Seems to be very cheap compared to the small boxes available from the local GC's.

Could you tell me a bit more about where and when to use lime.

And how often?  Do you find that it make a great deal of difference to certain veg?

in my 4 year rotation i lime the legume bed (so 1 bed each year) after potatoes.  don't add any manure or fertiliser 2 months within applying lime as a chemical reaction releases ammonia (and therefore nitogen content of the soil).  i tend to do it in autumn then come spring add the necessary fertilisers before putting in my peas!

I lime the brassica bed ... I too use a four year rotation

it's probably best to lime the brassica bed....but mine is never empty so i compromise!

the plot that I have has been dormant for a couple of years, so I have been 'sailing' with a bit of a wing and a prayer, but I do realise that soon the soil will need some TLC!!

I have a bit of plot that still needs digging.  I was intending it for the sweetcorn / beans / courgettes / squashes should I lime that bit too?

I too use a four year rotation - goes like this:

legumes - brassicas - solanums - alliums

However, do not know whether I should swap my solanums and alliums.  What do you other 4 yearers do?

PS never limed but planning on liming brassicas.
