Anyone know where to get cheep compost/rotted manure etc deliverd in bulk in North West London - an internet search only found one place and it seemed quite pricey.

Have a look in your yellow pages or thompson directories. See if there are any stables near to you or not to far away. Give them a ring and see what they say. There might be an innercity farm near you too. Hope that helps you. :)

do a search on manure at  www.adtrader.co.uk

some are giving it away, you only have to collect it

Thanks for the tips so far.

There is a city farm near buy that others on my allotments use but that seems mostly to be wood shavings.

I read somewhere that using fresh srtables waste was no good - you needed rotted waste.

If it's fresh it doesn't matter as you have an allotment so you can let it rot down or use it now.  If you got some now you could lay it on the ground where you want your bed and cover it over with sheet mulch for worms and weather to get to work on it.  Or put pile of manure on plastic and cover it up til spring when you can plant squashes, courgettes, runners and french beans in it.  I think you could grow straws in it too  :)

Manure is good on beds in autumn for those crops which are heavy feeders such as brassicas.  I grew my spuds on manure which I got in Feb and also the crops mentioned above.  A great deal of last Feb's manure is still covered up as it has a wasps nest in it so I can't get at it but it should be well rotted by the time I do  :)  Manure with wood shavings in it might take longer to rot down than stables who use straw  :)
I came, I saw, I composted

Closer in than I know I'm afraid. If you'd been in the Harrow area I could have pointed you in a few directions.

If you could get transport, the City Farm in Kentish Town lets you help yourself to their poo.
