Allotments 4 All

Hello, haven't posted for ages, hope you are all well. I'm wanting to grow some herbs for the kitchen but on all the packets it says sow in the spring. Would they germinate in a propogator on a windowsill this time of year, or am i going to have to buy the not so tasty supermarket stuff?

I think light is the problem, esp on a window sill.  In the Kitchen Garden mag last month Sarah Raven was saying she grows basil but in a warm greenhouse.  I manage to keep thyme and flat leaf parsley growing outside all year round.  I still have some basil in my tiny cold frame but don't know if it will survive out there for much longer.  Trouble with basil indoors is it gets white fly.  I have just potted up some greek oregano seedlings and they seem very hardy.  The ones I put in the garden and pots over the summer have done well and I'm thinking of drying some for winter use as they'll probably die back.  What I was thinking though is that some of them could be kept in the coldframe overwinter for planting on the lotty etc in spring.  You could perhaps do the cold frame thing to have some plants of good size ready for spring.  I'm thinking of the tougher ones like thyme, rosemary, lavender etc.  The basils are a bit more tender  though

Winter savory, coriander, chervil & chives always worth a shot...? I've germinated them in the last few weeks, but that was in the greenhouse...

Indian bloke in lotty put coriander in and it's now up!  I've just seen it as I left the lotty.
