Can't believe I'm actually asking this but can I cultivate brambles by sticking the cut ends of unrooted branches into the soil?   I have now cut back the hedge on my new plot but want to make a prickly barrier between me and the public footpath further along.

I know they will root if you bury some attached stem but what I mean is bits I lop off.

I've done it!  I had a lotty full but wanted to keep some as I like brambles to eat so I took some cuttings and put them in the gaps in the hedge.  They seem to have taken.  I cut them where a leaf joined the main stem (don't know if that was right) and sunk it into soil and watered it.  I dare say you could take cuttings from different parts of the plant and then should some survive

Hope so Iain, that's how I'm doing your loganberry cutting at min!!!!  ;D I've just taken the end of one of the new stems and buried it in the ground, still attached to mum at min though, so here's hoping. I'm sure the brambles will root, esp at min with so much rain about. If not, you can have my brambles..........

Any one want any cuttings? I got loads ;D

Soooooooooper. Thanks for that - much cheaper than buying a fence and a great backdrop for what will be my fruit area anyway!   ;D
