Unlike my nearest allotment neighbour, I have only had two small fires in 9 months. Now, however, I have an oildrum...

I presume I should bash holes in the base and in the sides, so that air can get to the stuff I burn in it.

Can any arsonists on A4All confirm or deny this?

Yes, I've got one of those incinerators made for a galvanised dustbin, and it has holes (about 1 inch diameter I think) all around the sides and in the base.

To get a real "chimney effect" it might be worth raising your drum up on bricks or similar non-flammable material so the air can get in from below.

Happy burning!

So whats wrong with composting? If the amount is that small take it to the recycle dump.  Mind you if you are burning your old carpet carry on ;D

Trenchboy

Carpets and piles of old and rotting wood that the previous owner seemed to think was a bonzo wheeze to keep in a stack.

Mubgrub

What on earth is a bonzo wheeze when its at home? ???

reedos

And there was me thinking having "a bonzo wheeze" was what you did when standing too close to your oildrum ;D

I love this time of year when we are allowed to have bonfires - composting is great and I'd love to have a shredder - but there's a great "primeval me man make fire" thing about setting light to stuff.

And then you go home and the OH gives you the third degree about the way your clothes smell.

There's no point making up a story.

It's a fair cop(not a blonde PC)

Having fires on an allotment is partly the reason I wanted one..... no I am not a fire starter but my Dad had a small incinerator in our garden when I lived in Kent. I was allowed to "poke at it" now and again! Now I am grown and have just acquired an allotment I now have full range to have a little "bonny" when ever I like!
:D
Happy as a Pig in  ..... an allotment!!

Ah, that's not quite true (wouldn't you know it  :))  I can't have one at the weekend as the bungalow next door has a barbecue - presumbably one which doesn't smoke.  Live and let live eh  ;D

We can have fires on our lotties but only if it won't disturb anyone else which is sensible.  I try and not have a smokey one so only put small amounts of weeds on at once.

My OH can't have a fire without throwing petrol on it.  It drives me maaaaaaaaad >:(   ;D
I came, I saw, I composted

Derek

Allegedly we should have a bonfire before six thirty.. also the wind direction has to be right and not on race days.
You see our site is next to the Leicester race course

Six-thirty..must be am 'cos no one bothers too much  ;)
