Planting sprouted garlic

Hi everyone, I have done a search and can't find the answer.

I bought an organic garlic a week ago.  It is huge.  It might be an elephant garlic.  Never seen one before.

After using a couple of cloves the rest of the cloves have sprouted big time.

I wasn't planning to plant them but now think why not.

How deep do I plant them.  Do I completely cover the sprouted part (3 inches growth) or do I leave some of it exposed?

It's spring here but it's been very cold.  Will they be OK in a large pot?

Thanks for any replies.

Never tried it but:

1. I would do as for normal seed - cover the bulb with 1" of soil.

2. Read http://www.thegarlicfarm.co.uk/ .

3. I don't like the idea of pots.

Hi Tim

Why don't you like the idea of pots?

I have run out of garden space.  Actually don't know how much space garlic will take up.

Any hints to help them in pots?

Thanks
Anna

I planted some in pots, there will be a thread on here somehwere I will look for you.
I have planted three cloves to a 12" pot as advised by someone here.
I also have winter peas and lettuce in pots, and the only problem I have is slugs!
This is due more to the facthat I can't get out and about at the moment but will be sorted soon enough, and if I have space they can always be transplanted from pots. If not I won't be too worried.

Just because I can't even keep raised beds watered satisfactorily.

However, if the pots are by the kitchen door, & you don't take a break, good luck!!

GARLIC LIKES WATER. In a pot garlic often gets too dry and is unsuccessful. Growing in the soil is much easier and garlic does not take much place.
I think you can try it when the pot is big enough for the roots.

update:
My garlic has come through already that was planted 2 weeks ago. Yes I have to water it a lot but the pot is big enough for it, have only put 3 cloves to a pot.
