I tried growing salisfy last year. The roots didn't seem to get that big, I don't know how big they are supposed to grow compared to carrots.  I didn't get to try them.
I did sow some again this year but they seem to have disappeared!

I'm down on Asheridge Road. Will you be around on the open day?

Hey - another of us!  ;D  excellent!!!!

sarah-b is around here too - she's Cameron Road too.

No to the open day - they've got it on the same dates as the Bristol Balloon Fiesta which I go to each year with a load of friends.  Pity it wasn't the first weekend in National Allotments Week rather than the second! Sarah might be though.

@ svea,
i have only ever grown 3 varieties :"noir geant de russie", which probably is  your "russian giant","meves" and "hoffmanns schwarze pfahl".
the latter one tends to flower occasionaly, which it should not (in the first year).  flavourwise, i could not tell the difference between the varieties. "grand geant de russie" did not germinate as well as the other two varieties, and this year, it is more mildewy than meves. and -as i said- the voles love it.
so next year, i´ll only grow meves.

I've tried growing both salsify and scorzonera, with pathetic results. I tend to get better crops now, after several years of chucking in organic matter, so I may try again. That's when I get a crop at all, of course!

I bought Salsify from the local garden centre - along with most other things when they brought them out in January they had a 2 for 1 offer on - I just made a small trench - and threw the seeds in and managed to get a good result - I'm growing them on a small patch that I never really got around to preparing properly - which also has beetroot on it - both are coming along very well -- though the swede between then didn't ever really get going neither did the pak choi or carrots I grew with them - but as it was a bit of waste land I didn't expect much

Salsify is lovely-but it sure does not taste like an oyster-how did it ever get that name?

In fact it`s one of the few things that have done well so far. My season has been really awful due to neglect when I was an emotional mess earlier this year.

But hey! there is next year :)
