Strawberry Runners sever before rooting?

Hiya

We've got loads of runners from the strawbs but they are in a bed with a plastic mulch.

Is it OK to chop the runners off and plant them elsewhere to root?

Thanks

Adrian

Last year I rooted them in to pots, and let them grow for about a month still attached to the parent plant before cutting them away.

However, I have seen in a kitchen garden magazine that it is okay to cut sever them before putting in to pots.

Lottie-less until I can afford a house with it's own garden.

plotofweeds,
if the plastic mulch is fairly tight you will find that any pots you try to root them in will get blown around on it (unless you use 2 litre+ sized pots!).
I'd be tempted to experiment (but then I always am where propagation is concerned) and try cutting some and layering some.
"Given that these are probably the most powerful secateurs in the world, and could snip your growing tip clean off, tell me, plant, do you feel lucky?"

I'll give severing them a go.  My first thought was to use pots but then what with trying to prop them up and keep them watered it seemed too much like hard work!

have done ways, i brought one into the greenhouse and have pots outside with the strawberrys stood up in, the one i cut and brought into the greenhouse didnt seem to take off well, it looked a bit ropey and i think this way is a bit hit and miss.

Outside i have lots (as im moving the strawberry patch at the end of this year) at first they tried to ping out of the soil, just from the springyness of them, but once in they have rooted very quickly and after just a week they look really good and the roots are VERY strong. i was tempted to cut them there and then but i think i will leave them another couple of weeks yet.

I always make sure they have some root system before cutting them loose.
The baby plants I push into the earth while still attached and cut the runner behind the first plantlet. Having your bed covered with plastic, you can't push them into the soil, so I was thinking. What if you take some balcony boxes with soil, set them alongside you plants and lay the plantlets in it to grow good roots, then cut them off and plant them out.
My lottie neighbor told me the new plants should be in their permanent place before August 15th. for a good yield next spring.
