I have only just got my plot which has been covered over for the past 12 months. Just stared clearing away the dead weeds ect... and have found lots of ants nests. Are these going to be a problem and how do you get rid of ants???? I have had ants in my garden for years and cant seem to get rid of them so I just put up with them. Could they damage veg? I am not planning on planting anything this year.

Please help....

Mostly they just up and move when you dig them over.

The main problem with ants is that they encourage aphids because they "farm" them for the honeydew but generally they are a nuisance rather than a problem. Red ants do have a nasty bite tho' so beware. On another message board many people swear by a bottle of clove oil in a can of water watered or sprayed onto nests. I have never personally tried it.

Thanks for the advice, think I will just leave them alone. Thought they were going to be a problem but if they dont eat my veg they can stay....
