Hi, my name is Donna and this is my first visit to the site also my first year growing vegetables, most thing have gone well except I planted some carrot seed 2 types, 'Samurai' and the other name eludes me. The Samurai all appear to have bolted but the others are fine, I haven't done anything different with them has any body any ideas.

I think it's when you sow the seed and immediately afterwards there's a prolonged dry spell  :)
I came, I saw, I composted

Welcome to the forum Donna, I hope you enjoy being here and acquire everything you need.  :D

You may well be right Wardy, different varieties are developed to cope with different environments, and it could be that Samurai just did not suit your conditions. Next year could be completely different of course, such is the nature of gardening . . . I have had numerous crops that have failed to yield, but chin up, I just keep plugging away!

Ooh! Just noticed - my 300th post!

Bolting in carrots is promoted by vernalisation soon after emergence (the same holds true for beets). As Derek says Samurai may just be more sensitve than other varieties. It may be better sown in the summer as an autumn maturing variety.

vernalisation- exposure to cold (fridge) temperature
Neil (The Young Ones) once said "You plant the seed, the seed grows, you harvest the seed....You plant the seed....."   if only it was that simple!!!

I sowed all sorts of carrots this year, and my samurai carrots are the only ones to have bolted,.....so far!
