Allotments 4 All

Hi,

I am going away for four weeks. I've got the OH on strict duties for the GH and the lottie! My early potatoes were looking a bit sick ( yellowing leaves) so I dug them all up today, they are beautiful. I now have so many I would like to know the best way to store them so they don't shoot.  I was hoping to leave them in the ground but I thought they might have had a disease.

Any suggestions would be welcome.

Also any other suggestions to make my OH's life a bit easier on the watering/weeding front while I'm away.

Some old gardening books say that dug veg can be stored in sand, in layered mounds.  I know carrots can be stored this way too.

I just put mine in a sack, then in the garage, or anywhere cool and dark.

Mine are stored in a hessian sack in the garage although paper sacks are supposed to be ok too. You need to store them in a cool, dark place but not in plastic sacks as this could cause them to 'sweat' and therefore rot

Sprout   Have you noticed though that supermarket spuds are washed and while still wet packed in plastic bags and sealed.  Loads of brown, rotting ones result!  Glad to hear you've got that many spuds you're storing them in your garage.  I've only had one boiling so far.   :)

Wardy, yes I've lots but a lot of them are fairly small. As this is my first year, I don't know whether I've got a good, bad or average harvest yet. Still got a row of Saxons to harvest and those that I have uncovered seem to be a good size.

If you are after good strong paper bags / sacks visit your local supermarket and go to the bakery section. They are usually more than happy to give you the flower bags they use. not as big as the 56kg ones so easier to lift and move.
Again store in a cool dark place . I use my garden shed.
