Allotments 4 All

I am stunned!!  :o I dug the first of my earlies tonight - Arran Pilot and could not believe what I was seeing. The majority of the tatties that were dug must have been at least 6" in size !! I can never remember earlies being this size when I was younger, so immediately dispatched some too my dad, just to show off!!This is my first full year in the allotment and had been disappointed by the look of the tattie shaws as they didn't seem too healthy and hadn't got to any size at all, so thought that they would be poor. How wrong can one be  ;D My maincrop - King Edward are going great guns at the other side of the lottie so I hope the opposite doesn't apply to them!!
I am thoroughly enjoying my time in the lottie this year as my strawberries and inherited rasps are producing masses of fruit, which keeps my daughter happy.

Sounds great!  :D I can't wait to grow tatties next year - we were too late this year.

Congratulations, Pilot is a very good flavoured variety (IMO) but quite often do not produce the yields of modern varieties - you seem to have the best of both worlds

Just shows - you should have started lifting when they were 'new' size!!

But they do seem to be growing large this year - despite, with us, rock hard & bone dry 'soil'.

 :'( Dug up my earlies at the weekend and only got 500 grams of tatties out of 5 plants. Thought I'd get more. And they were tiny, most of them... Was I too impatient? (AGAIN!!)

Mind you, they tasted better than the overpriced Royal Jerseys from the supermarket.... YUM  ;D

PS - If pots have grown large in parched soil like ours, it sometimes pays to bring them to the simmer in cold water. Otherwise they can break up.
