Can anyone help me with why my Lupins never grow much further than, getting lots of foliage that gets eaten by snails etc, i do put pellets down and they are ok for a short time but they just seem to give up the ghost about the same time every year, i like them so much what can i do?? i have grown some from seed and bought some and they all go the same way!!!.
I thought of growing them in pots, would that be a better option. Would they do any better in pots?.
Any suggetions would be welcome. .   Rosebud.

Just an idea,
Lupins have tap roots if I am not mistaken so the ground you plant them in is best not heavy clay or such. If it is try digging in sand and peat to lighten it and still conserve a little water.  I dont think they like wet ground and when new shoots show slug pellets around. I am talking 1-2ft deep at least.
Mums soil was heavy and she had the little black slugs in the soil and she would water with diluted Jeyes Fluid to protect her plants.
Just an idea not sure what your ground is like.

Oh rosebud, I love them, along with delphs and monkshood, but the slugs and snails grazed all of my plants off before they had a chance to poke much more than their noses through!  Now I have them all in huge pots, which I keep down the side of the house, and as soon as they start to look lush, out they come and I plonk them about the borders.  It is a pain, and I would much rather plant them and forget about them, but I don't want to keep loosing them!

While we're on the topic of lupins... I have put about  about 11 lupin seedlings in a large wooden crate in compost about 1 ft. deep (as I have no space left to put them anywhere and wanted to protect them from the evil slugs!) . I have "disobeyed" the spacing recommendations on the seed packet, but was hoping for an extra lush display, (even if they don't grow as tall as they normally would). Anyone think this would be okay as long as I feed and water them regularly or is this really too tight a spacing?  ??? Also, this is my first year growing them - they are still really small - anyone know when they're supposed to bloom exactly? many thanks!  ;) x

I am no expert, but isnt there a disease which gets at lupins and stays in the ground? For i too had a problem but seem to have solved it by growing them in the back garden instead of the front .I will Google when i have a bit more time for i too am a Lupin lover.

Now why didn't I think of that?  I've got lilies in pots for the drainage and hostas in pots for the slug problem.  I love lupins but they last about 5 minutes here before being chomped.

Rosebud - I'm perplexed - why do you think you won't get any flowers on your lupins this year? Because they're in pots?  ???

Hi Rox, no i shant get any flowers because the slugs and snails the little gits have munched every bit of new growth, so theres nothing left in the middle  :'(.

I am releived to see i am not the only one who likes lupins but cannot grow them due to the slime devils.

I have a couple in pots but even in there they are vunerable and never really do their best in them (ditto delphiniums).

SIGH  :'(

I put some in last year..one survived and it has lovely pink blooms, I thinkI'll give it another go, to see if I can get some out the front, they are so lovely...
