Mrs Ava

My cannas have been out now for a good couple of weeks.  They are hungry and thirsty so don't neglect them.  I am planning to plant half of mine straight into the garden as I now have about 8 pots full and I am sure they do not do as well in pots as they would if they had room to sprawl.

Cardoons, well mine (which was a rooted sideshoot, not a seedling) was planted out last autumn with plenty of leafmould around it to keep it cosy over winter.  It has put on lashings of growth already, altho the very cold snap we had did knock it back a little.  As far as I know, they are hardy beasts!

Cannas are a bit tender so if you're in the north leave them until frost is not a problem - er about September  ;D
I came, I saw, I composted

Since I have nowhere to over-winter anything i.e. no greenhouse or even a coldframe I just leave everything where it is and keep my fingers well and truly crossed. I bought 2 cannas last summer and put each of them in a big pot where they have stayed. So far I have 8 in one pot and 10 in the other. I guess I must just have been very lucky...I wonder how long this can last?

well sounds like u have been very lucky jane perhaps u just live in a warn part of England , lets hope your luck does not change

I leave mine in the ground all year too along with some Hedychiums, we had some light frosts this year, but they're all coming thought fine.
