Here's a couple of questions for the experts, we have another blackbird (or could it be the same one?) that appears to be carrying nesting material higher up into our piracantha bush can't see a nest yet though, why don't blackbirds use old nests, and do blackbirds have more than one breeding session in one season?

I'm just trying to workout if this blackbird is the same one that has just had a family and wants more?

Hi Roy
I'm no expert but we do get blackbirds nesting in the garden every years.  We've had as many as four breeding pairs.  They do occasionally use old nest, and the number of broods depends on how early they started breeding.  Generally it's 2 or 3 but you can get a 4th ::)

Also meant to say the pictures are wonderful and did you know that as a rule when they leave the nest and still being fed, they are split between the adults.  If there are only 3 not sure who get just the one, probably mr blackbird  ;D

;D Thanks for that MM ;) that was very interesting, glad to hear Dad carries on his duties after they leave the nest ;D

One of the fledglings (blackbird) was perched on our bedroom window sill this morning and it was getting such a telling off from the male blackbird.  You would imagine it was being told off just like a child.  'Get down from there, you dont go there'.

;D ;D ;D

Wonderful pictures - and the babies do remind you that they're the descendants of dinosaurs  ;D
Incidentally, we've had the same nest used for several years in a pyracantha, usually for two broods a year.

Lovely pics Roy. Have also heard that, apart from using old nests, balckbirds wil also build a couple of nests in the spring and then take their pic. Was told this when one was build in my passionflower and then didn't nest in it. Don't know if true.
