I inherited one from a friend. It is absolutely useless on heavy soil that I have at home. On my dads light devon sandy soil it works a treat.

It can also be used to pull up thatch from a lawn!

has anyone used one of the flame thrower type things for weeding?  Are they any good?

slugcatcher

I know someone who used a flame thrower and ended up having skin grafts on both legs.
Set his trousers on fire and they melted to his legs and couldn't get them off.
Its put me off ever using one.

I would think though they will only take the tops off and leave the roots to regenerate.

Ouch. They also burn the new seeds,so stop new ones popping up.

Obviously safety is always a concern.  This is an interesting article which explains it pretty well:

Justy,

I've heard bad reports on the little ones which use a small gas conatiner. They aren';t powerfull enough

The "full size" ones are good for certain jobs:

weeds in paths and driveways
the first flush of weeds after cultivation, assuming you haven't sown your seeds

They do not kill the roots, unless you burn the ground, which isn't how they are meant to be used but repeated use and its a lot easier than hoing will wear dandelions and so on down.

They are not good on overgrown weeds, that just starts a bush fire and kills all the good bugs and animals hiding there.

Phil
