Does anyone know where I can get a cheap water butt?  My lottie is miles away from a tap and watering is going to take me ages in the summer. In local DIY shop a water butt with all the bits and pieces you also need (downpipe, guttering, stand etc.) was going to be 50 quid.  That seemed a bit steep to me.

Hi again Jane....I use a black plastic dustbin as a water butt,(pretty cheap)I have cut a section of the lid away to accomodate the down spout which I purchased from B&Q,it didn't cost very much, along with the guttering and gutter support clips around £15 or so,I leave the lid on to stop any algae forming in the water,I agree the proper w/butts are pretty dear.An idea or two for you there anyway.Good luck.....Alan

...and get the guttering/downpipe etc from Wickes - cheaper than B&Q when I was pricing it up (although I didn't bother with a water butt in the end as the nearest hand pump on our site is fairly close, and I need the exercise!).

They do a smaller diameter gutter/downpipe and all the joints/fittings, so you don't have to have 'house-sized' pipes on your little shed.

I got my blue barrel off a skip.  Building sites usually have these blue barrels with lids as they use them to deliver cement and dry goods in to keep them dry.  They are quite big so will hold loads of water.  We put ours up on Sunday and just need to raise it off the ground now so we can get a tap fitted.  It half filled with water even without a down pipe in place which saved me a lot of work keep going back and forth to the stand pipe.    The plastic taps are available from Wilko or B & Q and you need a tank cutter to make a hole in for the tap (which I think fits onto a power drill)  You can join plastic butts together with overflow pipe so you can harvest even more water off your shed roof.  :)
