EJ  Wonderful. Have got to have a go next season (for Grandchildren you understand LOL)  I have  read a couple of posts am I right in the following? Plant seeds about April time in pots of compost (keep in greenhouse??) When do I plant them out? Have got plenty of horse manure so will that be of use? EJ please be patient with the aged and give a run down step by step to help me. I can then print and put in my ever growing garden file for things to do next. No problem Lorna. 

I sow the seeds, on their sides, in individual 3inch pots of multi purpose compost from the end of March onwards and keep them in my greenhouse.

Don't overwater as the seed will quickly rot, also, they are incredibly tender so if a frosty night is forecast, I turn my greenhouse heater back on.

Once they germinate they grow quickly so if necessary, repot them into bigger pots.

In May I plant them out into the sunniest part of my allotment.  I dig a hole, fill it with steaming horse manure, cover it over with earth, then plant the pumpkin plantlet into the middle of the mound.  I water it in very well and protect from sluggies who LOVE them!

To get the best squashes, water regularly.  Also, reduce the number of squashes, pinching out any that are mishaped or damaged, and for whoppers, I think you should only leave a couple per plant.  I don't nip any of the fruits out and mine seem to do okay!
