reviving an asparagus bed

Under all the weeds and rubbish on my new plot I discovered a raised bed of asparagus. Careful weeding and a new surround around the bed has reclaimed most of it. The weeds will take some shifting as they are entwined in the asparagus roots and there is a chance of killing the plants off if I dig too deep. I am thinking of mulching it with seaweed which is not exactly in short supply around here and as asparagus is a bit salt tolerant I can put it on straight from the beach. Hopefully the salt will kill or weaken the weeds and the asparagus will feed on it. Do you reckon it will work?

I actually give mine a dose of seasalt every year after picking is finished and its not harmed them at all so i think you should be ok with the seaweed.
