I have a very old, very neglected clump of bergenia which I don't want to lose but want to get rid of weeds and phygelius which is tied up in it. How brutal can I be in cutting the bergenia back, and how can i take cuttings if I ned to dig the whole thing up?

I'm no expert on these but I was quite brutal with my one last year.

When I dug it up it looked like a rhubarb root so I thought I would treat it as such and that was to rip / saw into bits leaving at least one growing bud on each piece.

I potted each piece into a suitable sized pot ( I found " Long Toms" were best) then  I dumped them in the cold frame on the allotment and forgot about them.

It was only this week I was clearing up and found them in flower so I gave a couple to a newbie on the site.(I usually give newbies something as a welcoming present to the plots)

So in my opinion it will be very hard to kill them.

All  would say is divide them after they have finished flowering!

I hope you find this useful....Tg
