Secateur recommendations?

Can anyone recommend good secateurs? I want to buy my daughter a present and the variations and makes available are bewildering, not to mention price range. They will mostly be used for chopping back brambles and cutting down autumn raspberries on her allotment. Thanks.

I like Fiskars Anvil secateurs, but to be perfectly honest, the cheapies from Lidl that I bought years ago also still give great service.  I use whichever comes to hand first.   They all cope with up to the thickness of a stem on a rosebush.  For much of fruit tree pruning a folding saw is needed, but there may be 'beefier' secateurs on the market, the above are fairly lightweight.

Fiskars or Wolf, I have used both (Fiskars at the moment).  Remember that you can have anvil or bypass, I would go for bypass for medium duty work but anvil is better for heavy duty work - if you have the grip strength to do it.  Spend about £15 to £20 and they should last you forever, or if you lose them like me, about 2 years.

Felco no 2.   Favoured by the professionals.   Excellent quality and durability for general garden use.  They do other models for specialist jobs and also one for left-handed people.   Will last for decades unless, like me, you lose them in the compost when daughter tips them out with her prunings or I drop them in a border and find them next season.  However, replacement blades are available and they just need a regular squirt of WD40 to keep in good nick.

When I did a horticulture course they recommended Felco, but at that price I've never bothered because I'm terrible for leaving them out and finding them rusting a few months later!

get Felco, but not the rolling handle one. I've had mine 14 years now and they do a lot of work. Send them to felco for a service. free sometimes for me when I used them to pose for television/ magazine shots.

yes felco no2  but i have to say ive both anvil and bypass types from lidl and they are going strong 5 years on so my expensive felco dont get much use unless i want to show off

TBH I have been very pleased with the cheap pair from Wilkos as much as the more expensive ones have.
