Cabbage growing 4 new ones from its cut stalk is old hat, but I can't recall Lettuces doing it.

This year they are really productive.

We are eating density second crop lettuce. This does seem abetter year for second growth :tongue3:.

I have more success doing it with lettuce than with cabbage, frankly, so long as you're happy with leaves not a heart. This year I've had bonus crops from Tom Thumb, Little Gem and even Webb's Wonderful. It's been my best ever year for lettuce, wish I knew what I'd done differently!

Pescador

I used to use as a commercial technique back in the '90's and 00's on beds of lettuce for Baby Leaf, Cos, Lollo Rosso, Lollo Verde, Red Oak Leaf, and other I can't remember now!

Our Winter gem but out about four side shoots each... quite naturally... got quite embarrassing as we ate some and there was more lettuce than we started with a week later..  :BangHead:

small spoke of leaves only.....

Eight reasonable 'almost hearts' from Little Gem - and still growing.

Doing it here as well.  The leaves are smaller but it works just fine.   :sunny:

I've never had a year like it for lettuce, though part of that is I realised how old some of my seed was, and sowed the lot to get rid of it, expecting nothing much to come up, and you can guess the rest.

I'm going to have to try that - probably a bit late in the season now,  but worth a go in case it's worth doing another year.

My garden is smaller than your Rome, but my pilum is harder than your sternum!

I reckon on 4 years seed life for lettuce, would be interested to know how old some of your seeds were and still came up.

Yes, from the reports it looks like most of us had great gooseberries and great lettuce too this year  :sunny:

Not tried it with lettuce, will give it a try.  Got a cabbage producing four new ones.  Calebrese good at it as well particularly after the winter, will put up some new heads in the spring from the roots even when it looks mostly dead.

The oldest pack was either packed in or sow by 2007. I don't think much came up from that, mind.

That anything came up was great.  8 years is a long time for lettuce.
