My garlic is covered in rust -worse than I've ever seen it- the leaves look dead! I dug one up today and it's pathetic, no sign of separate cloves. Guess I just need to get it all up pronto?

Mine too, worst year ever :-(

Weirdly, some volunteers that sat in the goround undiscovered cos they were so rubbish last year and I missed them have turned out to be particularly good garlic.... still waiting on the stuff that I actually (spring) planted.... though last years elephant garlic crop is still useable as garlic...

Mine too got quite rusty but then it always does. It bulbed but the heads are very small. I don't really know what happened. We did not get a very frosty winter, and I think it doesn't like that much. Guess it's just this year's crappy crop :-) In exchange I have kilos of rhubarb, so much of it that we are sick of it!!!
2012 - Snow in February, non-stop rain till July. Blight and rot are rife. Thieving voles cause strife. But first runner beans and lots of greens. Follow an English allotment in urban France: http://roos-and-camembert.blogspot.com

Worst year ever for mine as well... full of rust so pulled up 3 lines and still got 2 left to pull out.. they are not as bad so leaving them to grow on a bit.

My music started it all and have hardly bulbed at all. Almost just look like leeks!!
Now a member of the 10 Ton club.... (over 10 ton per acre)    2013  harvested 588 Kg from 165 sq mt..      see my web blog at...  http://www.gavinconway.net

Yes, my bumper crop of strawberries has made up for the garlic!

artichoke

My garlic and elephants are OK at the moment, still growing though developing rust but no rot so far (East Sussex) and I dug one garlic up a week ago to take to a family meal, quite respectable size.....

Just wanted to mention that a few years ago I came across single garlics for sale (not split, just small and round) beautifully packed in small wicker basket with raffia, making a virtue of being round and small and pretty.....like baby leeks...ridiculous, but it looked so charming I bought a little basket.

Yep my garlic had rust as normal, but when i pulled some of them up they were the very small, so small im not sure its worth the bother to even peal them to use!!! This was on both my own saved seed and this year i also brought some fresh...
My elephant is looking ok at the moment still growing strong..

Steve.

Dug up mine last week, absolutely covered in rust, but, they'd managed to get to quite a decent size (especially the elephants)
Maybe 80% of previous years size, so happy. Glad rust doesn't cause rot of the bulb.

strawberry1

my neighbour and I have lifted the best garlics we have ever grown, big, dry and clean. Strawberries however are very small and a waste of space

cestrian

mine are rusty too. Size is not too bad but they haven't split in to cloves. I was always told they need frost to split and I cant remember a winter as mild as the last one.

I am in the south East and my garlic was covered in rust- have just dug them up. I am glad I have grown so many as many had rotted or only formed small bulbs. Have just about enough left to get us by. Strawberries have been brilliant, my son refused to eat anymore last night as has had so many over the last few weeks.

Dug all my garlic up yesterday- absolute disaster. Leaves completely shrivelled, stems spongy and bulbs tiny. I think it must have been more than rust- maybe white rot, although only a couple had signs of it. :BangHead:
