My OH has been suffering with painful knees lately.  We have a kneeling mat but he was talking about buying some knee pad/protectors.  I did a search on here and found a thread from several years ago.   However, although there were suggestions, no-one seemed to be talking from experience of actually using them.   I wondered if anyone on here now uses a pair and can let me know what type, how comfortable they are and if they are effective.  Your help is much appreciated.

Has the problem been identified Pauline? Our SiL was a builder & used to use some thick gel ones that he found to be effective. He wore them all day so I presume they were comfy enough. I will ask him.

Not yet Grannyjanny.  He has an appointment at the end of the month.

I have never found a pair of knee-pads that didn't slip, because we gardeners tend to shuffle about on our knees.  Then the solution became obvious from a pair of motorcycling trousers with knee protectors.  Simply sew the knee pads onto the gardening trousers.

These days I use one of these: http://www.crowders.co.uk/buy/tools/garden-equipment/gardeners-kneeler-and-stool-by-town-and-country?gclid=CPjN4fTxl7cCFcXKtAodLn8ADQ

I recommend this wholesale supplier who will be used by just about every tool dealer, hardware shop and builders merchant in the UK. They will be delighted to order for next day delivery if not stocked. Use search bar to see wide range and the typical price you will pay. Take your knees with you to try the fit!

Pauline im a gas fitter and the work trousers have specific pockets for knee pads, i wear them all the time and they are comfortable, the other good thing is they dont slip because they are held in place. Hope this helps.

Thanks everyone.  I rather like the look of the ones from Toolbank so have asked my son if he can pick them up from a stockist near to where he lives and give them to my OH as a birthday present.

I will let you know in a couple of weeks how good they are.

Those overalls with the knee pads are very expensive, aren't they?  I suppose they are all right if someone is self employed and can put them down under expenses!

Just a word of warning about the type that fasten round with velcro - I got my mum a pair of these, and she somehow managed to give herself a huge bruise/blood blister thingie on the back of her knee, took ages to disappear...I think that happened with her shuffling around, as another poster mentioned. Me, I wouldn't be without my kneeler/seat, as much for the help it gives to get up again!

Yes they are Pauline, but thats one of the perks of working for a large utility company

I'm with M12 and small.
I have the hoselock kneeler/stooll, though I have had to fasten more foam padding to it when kneeling. I never use it as a stool.
It helps me to get up as well. I spend a lot of time on my knees at work so have a funny device for that as well.

My F-i-L could shoffle about on his knees like a kid when he was in his 90's no such luck here!

Hi_Hoe

why go to any expense - They sell knee pads in poundland, you know?! :tongue3:
If tha does nowt, tha gets nowt. Simple!

My son found the same pair of knee pads on line that I thought looked good at Toolbank.  They were being sold by Amazon and were a lot cheaper than Toolbank.  He then looked at the reviews and saw they were not very good.

He is going to chat with his neighbour who is a plumber and see what he recommends.

Now this post has given me ideas.  I have a hoselock kneeler/stool which my OH borrows when he has to kneel.  It's not enough on its own but if we added some more foam, maybe thick memory foam, it may be the solution.  Thanks pumpkinlover.
