I thought that there were strick EU regs about labelling each animal and tracking them.  How come someone did not notice the difference between a horse and a cow?

We had a batch of beef mince recently which I am sure was something else.  It was actually very tasty.

It has now got past a joke, drugs in the horsemeat could be dangerous. Findus outsourced its supply to a cheapo company, they pay pennies, but this saving is not past down to the shopper. Chocolate, meat, vegetables, etc are all coming from places with very dodgy pedigrees. Buy british only means it was packed here, even the prison food has been contaminated, they used to have farming prisons and grow their own.

We are lucky that most of us know where our veg comes from, but with the cheap outsourcing we still cannot be sure of the rubbish that is sold as potting/seed compost if you have to buy it. Vietnam supplys a lot of seafood, farmed in filthy conditions what amount of contaminates are in the water. I would also not be surprised to see dog meat turning up in the fishcakes. Remember corned beef years ago, bones collected along the Ganges were used in the process of making the stuff, later found out to have human bones amongst it. We don't seemed to have moved on very far. Greedy firms will always disregard the consumers if they can get away with it. We should star boycotting any firm that has been found out. They can shout that it keeps the price down, but the fat cat shareholders just divvy up the ill gained profits. They use cheapo suppliers they know it's wrong.  I have made it a lifes ambition never to go into  a MacDonalds (unless i want the toilet) because of their dodgy practices.

British farmers are not squeaky clean either, putting dead sheep into cattle cake and giving all the ladies of the land Mad Cows Disease.

I can help it but I start wonder how far from truth soylent green and sweeney todd films start to be from reality.. :disgust:
For me the idea of eating horsemeat is not revolting..just the idea for not knowing what I'm eating and what other 'surprises' come with those incredients.
Luckily we don't tend to eat ready meals or 'nasty pasties'...well..its pheasant tonight..so surprises there other than odd lead shot that may have escaped my attention.. :sad1:

So tons of meat products are being removed from the shelves, some containing 100% horsemeat apparently. Although how that happened I can't imagine. I can't ever remember getting 100% beef when that was on the menu.

So where's it all going to go, this horsemeat? Given the option I'd eat it, if it was free.

I knew it, now Findus fish fingers have been found to have seahorses in them.

Now as to eating horse meat I tried it in France and very nice too. They could market mince made of it and I would try it. But I need to know if it has not been contaminated with drugs. If they thought they could get away with the horsemeat. What else is in there?

Well said ace, can only see it getting worse if they are doing tests to find what stuff these animals were given even real beef from these dodgy locations has probably been given growth hormone steroids etc. These are all banned in a lot of europe but not all of it & as for chicken production outside the uk, still makes me shudder.

Chicken production within UK isn't all that great either.  OH was building a loading bay at a chicken slaughterhouse.  Manager  told him that chicks have to double their weight every day and we all know that aint normal without assistance.

Avoiding ready meals doesn't always help remember a few years ago some supermarkets selling chicken breasts injected with a plumping mix which included beef fat etc .....great when you don't eat beef like me.

It came from Romania. What did they expect. :dontknow: Next time I am shopping I shall asked to see the manager and make him give a written guarantee that what I am buying has no ingredients from Romania. We should all do the same and reject any product that cannot be 100% verified. The nuisance value should be enough to stop them buying the lowest grade they can find and foisting it off on us.

Think thats bad, whatever happened to the new method of ensuring fresh food kept better and longer "irradiation".  Seems to have fizzled out.  I am still pretty certain that it goes on though as this method kills bacteria in food but also stops it smelling off.

Does anyone know how difficult it is to test the meat?  Is identifying horse expensive.  I agree that it is the thought of meat of any description from Romania.

No wonder our own farmers are going out of business when they have to compete with goodness knows what from goodness knows where.

Nigel B

I just think its a crying shame if all that meat is thrown away. :BangHead:

Is there any reason it can't be donated to food-banks? I'm sure those in need, who aware of why it has been donated, would be grateful..

Its not that its horse that bothers me its that it come into the chain illegally and therefore we dont know what the horses were contaminated with or that thier brain tissue was removed from the carcasses properly to reduce the risk of things such as CJD , we dont know how old the meat is or if in fact it was fit for human consumption.

Im not adverse to eating horse but I want it to be safe to eat and well labelled.

Its only recent advances in DNA testing that even allow us to tell that this is happening , its highly likely that its been happening for years we just didnt know until now.

Glad the freezer is full of lovely roast tomatoes .

I guess I am lucky to have several good butchers within a couple of miles of me - makes a difference when you see the meat go into the grinder and he can tell you what farm the meat comes from.  The difference of course is price.  If i buy mince from them and make my own burgers it is double the price at least - triple if you buy the cheapest value supermarket burgers.  Ditto chicken.
