Campsites near London?

We're hoping to take our campervan near enough to London to travel into the city easily, but need to be outside the Low Emissions zone. Does anyone have any recommendations for sites?

There are a couple near Walton on Thames, the camping and caravan club one does not have toilets, so you need have all the amenieties on board. There is also Apps farm which I have sworn never to use again. Terrible place. Chertsey and Welwyn Garden City have  proper sites,  but these are a bit furthet out and need membership. I think there are some up  at Chingford, but I don't know anything about them.

There is a c&cc one near Waltham called Theobald's Park(I think) which we booked back in the days when we used a tent, but as we broke down on the way (!) we never experienced it in person! 

We looked into camping around the Epping forest area a few years ago,; there were quite a few sites which could be handy for the tube into central London.

Thanks for the feedback. We are in the C&C club so may use one of their sites, but it's useful to hear about personal experiences.

I can second the recommendation for Theobalds park we were there in August, facilities are nice and it took us 20 mins to get the from our NW11 home. We have a camper van so cannot comment on the tent side. I do know that a lot of Olympic games makers camped there because it is very close to tube lines into London. you can hear the hum of the M25  but not enough to keep you awake. hard standing / grass pitch electric hook up available. Qiut a level ste with good woodland walks and local pubs.

and I forgot to mention that Theobalds is very close to Enfields Cruise hill where there are lots of garden centres.

ha ha  I know - we were un route to some where else so I didn't get to go either - still another time perhaps. What type of van do you have ? we have a t5 VW called Helga.

A friend used a site in Abbey Wood for her campervan during the Olympics and Paralympics and enjoyed her stay.  I can find out more details if you want.

Both sites are pleasantly situated and of a very high standard.

we just got back from a christening up there. Some relations were staying in their caravan in Chertsey. They highly recommended it and always use it to visit the family. Not sure what the name of the site is but could probably find out if you wanted it.

Is it a petrol engine? if it is it might be worth considering  a gas conversion, cheaper to run and no emission charges.

No, Ace, it's diesel. And given how much we've already spent on repairs, I'm not sure its lifespan would be worth a conversion!

I'm in north Kent and there is one near me in Bridgewood, which is minutes from the M2.  Giving easy access to the rest of KEnt and with an hour of London.  Minutes from Bluewater shopping centre and about 20 minutes from the M25 and the  Dartford crossing!
