Went to get the 1yr check up  at the dentists,I told him my teeth very sensitive,so I got the xray and all my teeth  were fine, he cleaned them up ,before i left I asked,what tooth paste would he recommend for my very sensitive teeth ?colgage pro-relief was his answer ,I told him I clean mine once a week with Pearl drops ,for the tea & coffee staining ,I thought he was going to have a stroke,he blurted out NO NERVER USE THAT ! eh?I asked why? he told me it takes the top coat that keep the teeth white off!and the same with sensitive tooth paste with the whiteners thats why your teeth get sensitive in the first place using whiteners! do you think the tooth paste company's know this ? and if so, why sell it ? Is it so we bye the most expensive tooth paste called Pro Relief without WHITNERS at £2.85p did anyone else know this info?

No i didn't know that but don't intentionally buy ones with whitener in now i will make sure I definitely don't but I use pro-relief...got it as a free sample from the dentist several years ago and found it really works.....you can get it cheaper if you look for special offers. My teeth have never looked white at any point in my life...I was told white=weak enamel when i was a teenager and not to worry about my cream coloured teeth.

My friend's dentist recommended Sensodyne.

Our dentist told us once not to use whitening toothpaste with an electric tooth brush as it is to fierce and would take the enamel off.

We both have sensitive teeth and have always used sensodyn/ Recently bought Colgate with everything in. Whiteners enamel protector,sensitive teeth the lot.
Will be going back to the old Sensodyn F me thinks.

The trick to using Sensodyne or any other sensitive toothpaste is not to rinse your mouth after you brush.  It really makes it much less effective. Just spit the residue and walk away!

Funnily enough, I did know about whitening toothpastes being abrasive.  The traditional whitening brand was called Macleans. It was like brushing your teeth with peppermint Ajax powder.

You can still get simple brands without all the malarkey, like SR and Signal.  Bit of detergent, bit of breath freshener, that's it.  Plus, they're much cheaper.

All toothpastes are abrasive - even brusing you teeth without paste is abrasive to a small extent.  In America they even have a Relative Dentin Abrasivity index for toothpastes.
Not sure but I dont think there is similar for the UK but this page has some US RDA values for fairly well known brands - plus some useful info.

That's food for thought. I've used Colgate total whitening for many years but maybe worth alternating every other day with ordinary total to reduce the abrasiveness.

Did just get a fluoride toothpaste prescription from dentist must go and get it rather than make the prescription paper grubby in the bottom of my bag!

When I was at the dentist last week, she asked if I had sensitive teeth and seemed a bit put out that I didn't.
Maybe it is because I don't use sensitive teeth toothpaste.
The taste of minty toothpaste makes me gag, so I use Euthymol.

You have to be careful of these marketing companies that invent these conditions.
Take a look at that moisturising cream, there used to be 7 signs of aging, now there are 10.
I can only name two, wrinkles and hair loss/greyness.

I don't think that sensitive teeth is an invented issue or one that is caused by using sensitive type toothpastes - be thankful you don't have them!!
Sensitive teeth seems to be most commonly caused by gum disease which can expose more the tooth which is not so protected by enamel. 

I recall using Euthymol at some pont and thought it pretty nasty tasting - doesn't it use essential oils instead of mint??

I have been using the said t.paste as my teeth are sensitive but mostly to the toothbrush.. i had to stop using the electric one.
Gums have receded a little exposing some of the nerves.
Anyone reading that is young.. you need to look after you gums just as you do your teeth...and floss.
I am trying to get thro to our lad about this... but he knows it all and his gums are so angry looking.

My teeth are a little sensitive to cold, but not too bad. My dentist too says that white teeth are fragile and that it is better to have more ivory coloured teeth.
My gums are quite good and I have never used anything but ordinary toothpaste although I do regularly floss or use interdental brushes. My teeth were very neglected as a child, as my parents were scared of dentists  :( The result is 2 crowns and a root canal and very crooked teeth.
My kids have had braces and they do not have a filling (so far) and they religiously brush their teeth. I learnt my lesson the hard way!
