During the summer I purchased some tomatoes  from the supermarket. Lidl and was really impressed with the size and flavour. I saved some seeds and sowed them and have one little seedling.
I obviously don't know what type or variety these tomatoes are so is it best to grow as a cordon or bush?

Statistically it will be a cordon... go for cordon, if it is a bush it will become obvious!  :-\

Were they small plum-shaped ones?  I grew those last year outside as cordons and they did brilliantly.

They were as big as a beefsteak tomato but smooth and round. ...about the size of a tennis ball!

Commercial varieties often tend to be cordon.

Don't know if it's the same in the UK but here in France Lidl sell Marmande (which are big round ones), or smaller salad ones called Herzfeuer. They also sell MoneyMaker (but a variety that I always found tasty!)
In any case they were all vine types and grew up stakes  :)
2012 - Snow in February, non-stop rain till July. Blight and rot are rife. Thieving voles cause strife. But first runner beans and lots of greens. Follow an English allotment in urban France: http://roos-and-camembert.blogspot.com
