My Polish daughter-in-law is in her thirties but looks a lot younger.  She took a bottle of wine to the checkout in Aldi yesterday and was asked for ID.  She showed them her Polish id card with her photo on which is written in Polish and English but they would not accept it. She asked to see the manager and he said it had to be an English id card.  I didn't think we had id. cards here, or do we?  She doesn't drive so hasn't got a driving license and her birth certificate is written in Polish.

She's writing a complaint to Aldi's head office.

I noticed only other day in our local post office that they had "we accept Id cards" sticker on counter. Suppose that is to do with those thousands of ID cards that was already issues before the whole cheme was scraped.. ::)
I think goverment was planning one time that everybody would carry one...but when there came change to the 'power', I think it was conservatives who announced that they won't carry on with the cards.
So those who already forked the money for the cards are still able to use them.
As for your D-I-L..she might have to use passport instead of her Polish ID..what a load of hassle for over a bottle of wine.. ::)

The only problem is that her passport is in Polish too.  I think the staff in Aldi were just being 'jobsworths'.  The woman on the checkout is German and she told my daughter-in-law to use her driving license instead.  That would be ok if she had one.
Looking so young for her age has drawbacks.  ::)

It's forever changing, isn't it?  I worked for a supermarket just over five years ago and was told absolutely NOTHING other than a passport or driver's licence would be accepted as ID for any challenge items.

It happens to me all the time, it's so frustrating isn't it!

The retailer has a duty to comply with the age restrictions and it's the poor cashier who gets prosecuted by Trading Standards and then sacked if she gets it wrong.  Mrs. U. works at a local supermarket and all they accept are driving licenses and passports.  There are an awful lot of different "ID" cards in the world and I don't think it's reasonable to expect a cashier to recognise the real ones from the fakes.
