Couldn't believe my eyes when I popped up there on Saturday morning to cover my rhubarb and aspargus with leaf mould.  Had a row of brassicas next to my kale which had long lost the label, I blamed the fox, but it could have been my bad housekeeping.  They have sat there since summer, looking lush and compact, doing little, not gettting munched by catterpillas, unlike its neighbours the kale.  Haven't pulled them out as they are coming to no harm, are on plot number 2 which doesn't go into production until the spuds go in.  Glanced at them on Saturday, and what do you know, all of them have lovely little white curds coming!  Will they be okay if the weather tuns siberian??  So excited.  Didn't get a 'proper' cauli last year, they all split and behaved more like brocolli.

labelling - what's that?

I'm being better this year so far, actually. But I doubt it'll last past April!

EJ - good oh. Although caulis are one of my least favourite veg. Always prefered the greens to the actual flower!
gone to pot :D

isn't it the way that stuff 'forgotten' about gets on with it and grows! a nice surprise-so, cauli cheese??
sorry EJ, don't know about hardiness :(

tim

Most 'winter caulis' are frost hardy, Emma.

Moggle

Well done you  :) Aren't caulis supposed to be hard to grow?
Lottie-less until I can afford a house with it's own garden.

The cauli is hardy enough e.j. I have got a romanesco who is producing nice green caulies, but that is also more a broccoli than a cauli, but never the less.I went today to my allotment and what do you think i find growing in my coldframe  ??? ??? ??? ??? ??? little lettuce seedlings, must be spoilt seed.

Bramley

Thats great Emma Jane, i always get excited when my first cauli start coming throu.

They will stand the frost EJ and they wont blow or go to seed as quick as summer ones either ..Jim
Cheers .. Jim

What good planning and foresight, Emma  ;)
Am envious as our  winter caulis were bought plants and didn't take at all - we had forgotten to sow any ourselves.
Equality isn't everyone being the same, equality is recognising that being different is normal.

Yum Yum EJ.....Cauli cheese browned under the grill  :) one of my favourites!!

Multiveg

Should have had a cauliflower but it changed its mind last autumn - autumn begins with an a so not too far from April! Me jealous.
