Raspberries - Summer fruiting early and mid - Which variety is best?

Hi all!

I have grubbed up two lines of raspberries due to  age and columbine weed!

Is there a variety that I should not miss - I like raspberries mainly for eating raw so large and flavoursome.

Your comments would be appreciated.

Have a look at tulameen, only had them a year but they were large and very sweet  :)

Glen Moy...fruits early and repeats in autumn.

Tulameen do not like my limey conditions.

I like Glen Ample.

But my faviourites are the Summer JoanJ.  Cropped from July to November.  So far birds not interested in them.

I also grow Glen Ample and they produce huge gorgeous fruits.  I wax lyrical about them every year.

My vote would be for Joan J, and cut half down each winter and leave the other half uncut, that way you get them for a very long period, but even cut as autumn fruiting they fruit July to November as Digeroo says :)

Thanks for the suggestion about leaving some of JoanJ to fruit in the spring.  Too late for me this year unfortunately, I got brutal, but I will leave some next year.  They started last year when the strawberries tailed off.    Even with only a few canes (originally only six), I was cropping 2-4 supermarket sized portions a week for 4 months.  Why waste the space on a few summer ones.  However they do seem to be rampant.  Even with very limey soil after only two years I am already finding their roots about the place.

I certainly recommend JoanJ for anyone who has given up on raspberries because of dieing back due to lime.  `

In the US they are known as Everbearers, a much better description of their habit than Autumn.

No, Bliss is around 10 days earlier than Joan J. I prefer Joan J because it's spine free which means you can do the pruning method above & not get scratched. Commercial growers prefer Bliss as the fruit is firmer, earlier & they prune with a tractor & cutter so don't care about getting scratched.

I planted Glen Ample last year as a summer variety but did not get many from the first year but am expecting much more next year.  I also chose Polka which harvested from Jul and just finished in December.  Not many with it being their first year but still an impressive yield.  I chose polka because they are a spine free variety which makes it so easy for the kids and I to harvest without getting stabbed with thorns.
