Pickling cucumbers

We love sweet bread and butter style cucumber pickles in our house. I usually just use my standard greenhouse cucumbers, Passandra and Camilla.

I was considering getting a proper pickling cucumber to try next year. Then I wondered if picking the 'normal' cucumbers small would work just as well? Has anyone any experience of this?

Also, can people recommend a good pickling cucumber, which I might try as well. I think I'd have to grow them outdoors, as I won't be able to mix them with my with my all-female greenhouse cucumbers.

I don't want gherkins, I was thinking firmer, smaller, but bigger than gherkin cucumbers for sliced pickles - if that makes sense! The sort that the Americans use.

Thank you for all info gratefully received.

I've pickled cuc's, they 'squeak' when you eat them ! Quite tasty.     Cheers,     Tony.

We do 'cuie and onion', Ray likes it with roast beef and it's still going 12 months on  ;D

Someone gave me some Mohikan seeds and they have done very well outside in a very windy position, but I have no idea about the flavour I give them all away.

Thanks Digeroo - that sounds a possible variety to try, having Googled it.

Don't you like cucumbers? It's nice of you to grow them for others.

BTW, although it's interesting to hear about other people's pickle preferences it is specific varieties to try I am after.  ;)

Greenfingers at 10cm?

I'll stick to Delia's rcipe.

Morris

Thanks Tim.

Delia's recipe is what the American's call 'bread and butter' pickles.

Delia - I do chunks rather than the US slices - & I add Red Pepper for colour.
