Anyone know where I can get hold of a Mattock. I've been searching for one in all my local garden centres, but none has any. And the local soil is heavy clay, so you'd think there'd be demand for them.

I also can't find any on the internet.

Do they actually exist?

And are they worth it for digging heavy clay that's not been cultivated for years and is very compacted?

They are wonderful things Aqui.  Have you tried any builders merchants.  ie, Jewsons or Travis Perkins.  Thats where I got mine from.. Mind you, I hope your feeling strong,  using mine nearly killed me.  Got muscles like Arnie now  ;)
Take time to stop and smell the flowers.

Thanks Mimi - i'll give it a go. I think it'll have to be Mr Aqui's toy!

Car boot sale are good for these. I have a couple I have picked up for a few pounds but the handles cost an arm and a leg. You can also use an adze, an old ship builders tool and they are usually lighter.

Have to say got mine from Chillington a few years back, the service was great and they are tools I couldn't be without!
