After a few heavy showers earlier on yesterday it finally tipped it down for  several hours in the evening,  Filled up the water butts.  Had to swtich them off but rather sad that I was throwing water away,  Did managed to hove several bucket loads over my red currants and bean trenches.

Good amount of rain but it has not thoroughly wetted the soil so three inches down it is still as dry as a bone.   An inch of rain is just not enough to undo the effects of nine dry weeks.

But the birds were singing its praises this morning.

I just cannot believe how fast the weeds are growing and I think my potato plants are already six inches taller.

We've had a good inch over the last couple of days, but the soil's still barely damp. If we don't get another inch fairly soon I'll be bowing down to mighty Baal, in case he can do the job for us.

Trust me we have a problem Houston here in the east. North Lincs had an hour or so about 6 am and you wouldn't know it now. Goodness know what the crops are going to be like this year for everywhere east of the pennines. Getting humus into the soil is top priority. I line my spud trenches with newspaper and compost before I puddle them in. Gets them off at least.I've done the same with the beans. Amazing what you can use the FT for...

We finally got proper rain overnight last night- home water butt is full and one at the plot which was completely empty is half full. Yook the opportunity to get some hops down for a mulch on garlic and asparagus.

am SO looking forward to the lottie tomorrow-I may be able to do a better job on making the sprout and leek beds ready now that they've had a good soaking.

We too had a drop over night and now the weeds are growing faster than the plants I want to keep.
Oh dear that is the way of gardening I suppose.

Got them back now to put some tread on them
