Slow Worms

A notice has just gone up at the site to say that we have to beware of Slow Worms are they like to frequent the allotments... :)

I know they are a legless lizard but has anyone had any dealings with them and if I find one should I give it something to shelter in?

THey like compost heaps, they don't like being disturbed....

Just leave them be, they eat slugs, and know how to look after themselves. They shelter under pieces of wood, stones, etc, and like to dig themselves into the soil.

They are also a protected species, so watch were you are sticking your fork. ;D ;D ;D

They are a great asset to the site and a poorly researched species. As others have said they like compost heaps and long grass. They also like carpet or other ground cover so beware when moving it or digging on ground you have recently uncovered.

If you do have to move one when digging I tend to drop them in long grass to give them cover whilst they relocate elsewhere on the plot.

Look after them.

I have found many slow worms in my compost heaps - they are beautiful, totally harmless and to be protected.

came across my first one, it was beautiful,  pale gold ontop and russett brown underneath, very happy to have them on the plot, named him bob and let him slip away.. :)

ahh so thats what ive been finding. Ive been dropping them into the grass so ive been doing the right thing.
