only partly - once bill paying services were taken away from the post office or shared with all sorts of shops, their earnings went right down.  Are they even still paying out pensions?  Or do they now all go into bank accounts.

We had 3 post offices within a mile of us, all have closed.  The queues at the main post office in town are horrendous.

totally the reverse!
try waiting in a queue while folk are sending stuff out for ebay sales!!

I post out in excess of 1,000 letters per year, from my local sub-post office, helping to keep it open.  how many do you post, Jim?
You couldn't make it up!

A handful of ebay businesses in the vicinity can be the making of a sub-PO.... the one in my brother's village is basically supported by that..... they don't even bother opening in the morning now (run by pensioner.... she opens at 3, at 3:30 the ebay sellers turn up with about 200 small parcels to send out, collect their handful of big parcels, at 5-ish the van turns up, she's shut again at 5:15.....

Our post office is wonderful. They take the equivalent of 3 counties in that one location. And there's only 1 desk.

How do they do this?

Parking outside; very pleasant and friendly customer service and they love ebayers.

Job done.

I'd rather wait in the queue here than use any of the other post offices on my travels; the ones I do have to go to because of timing issues make me see why they are closing all over the place.

Parking outside

8 counters but only 2 in use in the main post office on a busy saturday the manager got rather annoyed when after waiting 20 minutes for a book of stamps, I asked to see him and then demanded my 20p it had cost for parking at 60p an hour. Surely you're joking he said, Do I look like a bloke with a sense of humour I said as increased my claim to 22p..  He said he would escort me off of the premises, yeh! you and who's army? Anyway I use the miserable old moo in the village even though she once turned on me when I suggested next time she had a shave it might be worth putting a blade in the razor. I am sure they deliberatley shut the position when it gets to my turn in the main post office.

I realised many years ago how much quicker email can be than snail mail. My step daughter asked if I would email a friend of hers (former college student) for information, he was in Germany. I sent the email and the reply was transmitted within 3 minutes. I couldn't have done it quicker by phone.
