Urine for compost: practicalities of collection

I poured libations to a couple of my rhubarb clumps this afternoon.

I've always used a plastic 4 pint milk just thingy me bob. Get some strange looks walking down road to plot though lol

I always understood that female urine was a no until they reach a certain age due to the hormone estrogen

Well at the moment a glass of Fern Bay New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc from a 3-litre box from Tesco.

Depending on the amount of the 3-litre box left will result in some collectable HLW!

A friend of mine at the plot saves his up and bottles it in fizzy drinks bottles which he carries to the plot in a little rucksack.  When it was cold and icey he slipped and his feet shot out from under him and he landed on his back.  His fall was broken by the rucksack but a bottle split and the contents spilled! Bet he smelled nice for the rest of the day..  ;D

Great idea to put it in the compost or comfrey, but if you are spraying it about in a butch fashion then you need to consider the salt and nitrogen content. Established plants like plums and blackcurrants love nitrogen and can take quite a bit of salt but the only veg I know that likes both is onions.

For everything else it's better to dilute it first*- unless the weather is diluting it for you by raining cats and dogs.

*At the risk of sounding like Homer Simpson, you can always dilute it before you produce it by drinking lots of beer ;)!

My daughter, who is a long distance cyclist rather than a gardener, but is faced with a similar problem of having to pee at the side of the road sometimes, recommends a device called a "SheWee" http://www.shewee.com/newstore/

What a great invention- I'd never heard of it. The testimonials for the SheWee were very interesting and made me think how carefree men are with their "design".

I spent a whole summer weeing on one particular clump of rhubarb every time I was on the plot to see whether I could harm it. It was perfectly happy until we had a few dry weeks, when it wilted. The rest of the rhubarb was fine. It bounced back next spring.

Another vote for the 2 litre plastic containers that milk often comes in. They come with a plastic screw top that seals reasonably well (but not perfectly)...vital for keeping pongs in and bacteria out.
Can't see the sense using 7 litres of treated water to flush urine down the loo all the time. At the moment it goes with me down the plot and gets poured onto my leafmould pile

As we don't drink cows milk in our house I think I need to start asking around for 4 pinters especially if we get a water meter ;) ;D.

Seriously though is it ok to put lots of it on the composter. We have 2 1sq mtr ones at the plot & a hexaganal one at home.
