You might be interested in galagal - it is widely used in SE Asian cooking and is a close relative of ginger. The flavour is slightly similar but you can't assume it is exchangeable for ginger in most recipes.

As far as I know there's no such thing as galangal beer (though it's not quite a googlewhack) - maybe I should invent it!

It is much hardier than ginger - absolutely reliable in a citrus environment (normally 4C or more with occasional dips to 2C but never less than 0C).

On the plus side - it is a lot harder to source than ginger so it is more worthwhile to grow (assuming you use it - but you should).

On the other hand it doesn't have the flavour it develops in the tropics so you need about 2-4x as much as the recipe says.

It might be worth a try growing in the garden but this winter it would need a huge mulch - I'd try at least a metre around the plant and 20cm deep over it...

Cheers.
With a microholding you always get too much or bugger-all. (I'm fed up calling it an allotment garden - it just encourages the tidy-police).

The simple/complex split is more & more important: Simple fertilisers Poor, complex ones Good. Simple (old) poisons predictable, others (new) the opposite.

I have been trying for years to do it and have brought back fresh roots from Asia.

I can not get it to grow

We have one in a pot in the living room... it's about four foot tall so far...  :)

Saddad,

Have you tried comparing the flavour with the bought stuff - I'd be interested to know if yours has or has developed the same mildness as mine.

I worry that mine might be a different (mountain?) variety rather than just pining for the paddies...

I'd be grateful for any light you can throw on the subject.

Cheers.

We haven't actually tried harvesting any yet... so I don't know if it's pining...  :-\

I planted a piece of root ( or rhizome ) about 3 month ago, and it has rooted, but all you can see above the pot is a tiny green spike about half an inch, looks like its fallen asleep!
